A perfect summer day greeted athletes at the 2014 Huronia Triathlon & Duathlon.
The Kids of Steel races kicked off the festivities, and set the tone for a wonderful and fun filled day of racing.
The Give-It-A-Tri grabbed the limelight next. Toronto’s Scott Knowles and Waterdown’s Emily Chant (pictured below) claimed the overall wins.

Next on the agenda was the SprintTriathlon and Duathlon.
Richmond Hill’s Andrew Bolton and Newmarket’s Kristen Marchant both members of the Recharge With Milk Triathlon Series Ambassador Team, reached the top of the podium in the Sprint Triathlon.
American Brett Saunders (visiting us from Camp Chikopi) swam 9:49 to lead all competitors out of Penetanguishene Harbour, with Bolton in close pursuit (11:05). Bolton powered to the front with his signature dominant 30:12 bike ride, then he got off and closed with the top run of 18:00 to cruise to victory in 1:00:48.
Newmarket’s Kristen Marchant made a successful return to the 2014 triathlon season after dealing with a stress fracture in her foot all year. Second out of the water (11:10) behind American Brooke Saunders from Camp Ak-O-Mak (11:04), Marchant posted the top bike (34:15) and ran her first 5km of the season (19:23) to easily separate herself from the rest of the women’s field to win in 1:06:38. Caledon’s Matt Bedernjak took the overall victory in the Sprint Duathlon. Bedernjak posted top splits in all three segments. He completed the first 5 km run in 22:10, biked the 20 km in 33:43, and finished the final 2.5 km run in 11:06.
Stayner’s Angela Gervase did the same in the women’s race. She ran 24:31 to start, biked 41:56, and ran 12:41 to earn the clear victory.

The girls of Camp Ak-O-Mak made their annual visit to the race, and entertained with their camp song.
Make sure to stop by the Recharge With Milk Recovery Zone go get your post-race Chocolate Milk, some swag, to hang out in the shade in comfort, or to take some post-race pictures at their photo booth.
Consider joining us for the inaugural Barrelman Triathlon. It will be one of the highlights of the 2014 season.

Mike Cheliak’s Africa Yoga Project Service Mission
Mike Cheliak from My Sports Shooter has dedicated three weeks in August to a service mission in Moshe Tanzania with the Africa Yoga Project (AYP). AYP educates, empowers, elevates and employs youth from Africa using the transformational practice of yoga. Before leaving for Africa, Mike hopes to raise $4000 for the organization. Mike covers all costs for travel and programming so this fundraising is directly for the project. AYP is in the process of building a community centre facility in Moshe Tanzania and Mike will be working hands on to assist. Please support AYP and Mike by making a donation to this fundraising page.
