The tradition continues at the 21st Bala Falls
The Bala Falls Triathlon first started on Saturday August 12, 1995, in memory of Lisa Hamman, a passionate triathlete who lost a battle with cancer at the age of 31.
From one of the original participants, Tony Chisholm:
“What I remember, is a fun cottage race with a group of good friends and very competitive athletes. The race was a bit different than the Tri s we’d been doing because it was handicapped.
Everyone’s time was based on results from previous races which made them rough estimates at best. If anyone has done a handicap race they know how brutal this format can be. You’re killing yourself trying to catch the person ahead while always looking back to be sure someone who is supposedly slower than you, isn’t catching and humiliating you.
We all raced in Lisa’s memory, which was still very fresh at the time, and it was a wonderful celebration in her name.”
This classic Ontario race continued this year at the cozy Jaspen Park.

The men’s race saw Toronto’s Mikael Staer Nathan and Waterloo’s Edward Cyr closely battling each other over the first two segments. Staer Nathan led Cyr out of Moon River with a 10:24 swim over the 750 m course (leaving Cyr 21 seconds behind), then with a quick transition and a 46:20 ride, Cyr snagged the lead over Staer Nathan (Staer Nathan rode 46:29).
Cyr took a 6 second advantage onto the relentlessly hilly 7.5 km run course, but Staer Nathan, a member of the Recharge With Milk Ambassador Team, asserted his control over the race by hammering out a race best 26:28 run to pass Cyr to take the overall win in 1:24:10. Cyr held on for second (1:28:53), and Scott Hill of Thunder Bay finished third (1:31:32) with the second best run (26:52) of the day.
