Spencer Summerfield: My Summer Recap – The Good & The Bad

This recap has been a log time coming and with my down time from training I now have some free time to write this. This past summer was the busiest to date I raced 10 duathlons, 2 running races, battled small injuries, hormone problems, my daughter was born and my mother was diagnosed with cancer. All this happened in such a short period of time that it has felt like a very long season.

My season started with a 10k road race to test my winter training and it was anything but fantastic. This was April and I had a bonk in my training in March. It was around this time my bodies hormones were so screwed up I was barely hanging on. After the 10k it was Iron Hawk Duathlon which annually I race as my season opener. This race also did not reflect all the hard training I had done all winter and I started to have heart rate issues as I battled running and cycling while on beta blockers (suppress heart beat).

Daryl Flacks reclaims the Barrelman Bike/Run Title

The third annual Skechers Performance Niagara Falls Barrelman Triathlon presented by Recharge with Milk, took place September 18th , 2016. It was a chance for redemption, an opportunity to reclaim my Bike/Run title I won in 2014. In 2015, Brad Arndt put together an impressive 1:26:21 half marathon for the overall win, relegating me to a 2nd place finish. I lost it on the run of all places, witnessing a 9 minute lead to Brad dwindle away. I was beat by a stronger competitor but that didn’t make things any more palatable.

Barrelman is without question, a personal favourite of mine and for a number of reasons: (1) I won the Inaugural event! Any time you can put your stamp on a race, it immediately makes it more memorable, (2) the bike course is flat and fast and mimics the roads of Essex County. This allows me to train with race specificity in mind, (3) it’s a late season race; enabling athletes ample opportunity to tailor training for a peak performance, (4) iconic run course; passing the falls twice and finishing in the heart of Kingsbridge Park adjacent to the splash pad and the large covered pavilion, and (5) Race Director John Salt, who’s passion and attention to detail is outstanding. John goes out of his way to speak to as many competitors as possible, ensuring their experience is a memorable one. Read more

#MSCWasagaBeach – Our 15th Year & Awesome Weather

Thanks to everyone who came out to our 15th Wasaga Beach Triathlon and Duathlon Weekend.

Racers on both days were treated to near perfect swim conditions. Saturday featured sunny skies, steamy temperatures, and a packed beach area which made for an exciting finish line area along Beach Drive. Sunday’s mostly overcast skies created cooler racing conditions, and thankfully the forecasted rain stayed away.

Here are some of our First Timers. Congratulations & Welcome to the Triathlon Family!

#MSCBracebridge – Home of The Time Trial Triathlons

When you race any of the triathlons at Bracebridge, it is the “Race of Truth.” With everyone starting the swim in 5 second intervals, it’s you against the clock, and every second counts. Taking it easy for a few seconds can make the difference between first and second place once you cross the finish line. This type of format sets the stage for some interesting and exciting racing.
