The Making of a Good Orthosis: Tips for the Savvy Triathlete
Do you really need one?
Orthoses should not be handed out like T-shirts at a local race.
They simply are not the proper modality for every triathlete with
a running/cycling induced injury.
Designed for Triathletes!
Orthoses for use in running/cycling shoes should be feather-light.
That’s not to imply they should be a simple piece of cheap
lining material however, thick, heavy, leather-lined versions have
no place in a 9-10 oz running shoe. You may as well buy a Brooks
Beast and get maximum mid-foot control with your shoe alone.
Who’s making your orthosis?
The guy beside Laura Secord’s in the mall kiosk or an office
that sells lotions, potions and pillows as well as orthotics is
not likely your best choice. Don’t be talked into “orthotics” by
someone who dabbles in foot posture. Locate a Pedorthist, Orthotist,
or Podiatrist who are athletes themselves and who specialize in
athletes. It’s best to deal with a foot care expert who also
has experience in your sport.
3D…3 dimensional that is!
If you are submitting a claim for orthoses through your Insurer,
you’d be wise to ensure that the orthoses are madefrom
a 3D cast of your feet. For example, the practitioner should be
able
to show you your plaster of Paris foot model. Insurers have begun
to reject claim for “inserts” made by having you walk
across a pressure pad. These do not produce a true custom orthosis.
On-site lab = speedy service
What happens if your top cover tears or you loosen a post or you
find that there is an intolerable area of pressure? Can your practitioner
fix it for you at their own clinic in a few minutes or will you
be waiting till mid-season for the repair to be sent to an external
lab?
