Running Races
Exciting News and Changes For 2007
Three New Races
We are very pleased to announce two new races and some exciting changes to existing races.
July 1st is the date for the all new Welland Triathlon. The new race site is further along the canal and will now have a much easier exit. The bike course is relatively flat and the run will be on fitness trails and paths similar to the Burwell Triathlon.
The 11th Annual Bala Falls Triathlon joins the HSBC Triathlon Series on July 29th. We have also added a Give-It-A-Tri distance
The Toronto Island Triathlon on August 18 replaces the toronto Waterfront Triathlon. This is a very fast and flat course with NO RAILROAD TRACKS OR BRIDGES. Your race fee includes the Ferry Fee to get to Toronto Island.
Changes In 2007
The Parry Sound Half Iron Distance and Triathlon/Duathlon event is taking a break from the 2007 schedule due to road construction. They are widening/extending Hwy 400/69 through Parry Sound and the road that we have historically taken to cross the highway (the only one without an interchange) will be reduced to a one-lane temporary wooden bridge in 2007. This construction (with two-way traffic over the bridge) will make the bike course unsafe. We hope to be back with the Half Iron Distance races in 2008.
The Gravenhurst Olympic Distance Triathlon and Sprint Triathlon will BOTH START from the Steamships at Muskoka Wharf. The steamship start was a big hit last year along with the new and much bigger Transition Area (with NO MORE RAILROAD TRACKS on the bike course).
Give It A Tri Category for our Season Awards - One of the things we learned from our Focus Group evenings in 2006 was that there are a lot of athletes who don't have the time to train for races that are any longer than our Give It A Tri distance of 400m/10km/2.5km. We also heard that there is a perception that Give It A Tri or Try A Tri was seen as a distance for beginners and not "real" triathletes. When we thought about the fact that 10km running races are legitimate distance races that people train for as a goal race, we realized that we should consider the Give It A Tri as a very legitimate race distance and reward athletes for their efforts.
Starting in 2007 there will be a Give It A Tri category for our Season Awards. To be eligible for these awards an athlete must compete in at least four Give It A Tri distance races. Points will be awarded based on race day results and count toward the Season Award. While in some cases the race day awards might be given in 10 year increments, the Season Awards will be in 5 year increments. Given that we will have this Series Award we have also added Give It A Tri distances to every Triathlon race weekend and now have NINE (9) Give-It-A-Tri's in 2007.
TWO Triathlon Kids Events - Lakeside and Cobourg
Back Again
August 25 and 26 - Calabogie Peaks MultiMan and Off Road Races - The weekend will include traditional Triathlon and Duathlon, Off-Road Triathlon and Duathlon and MultiMan. MultiMan is a TEAM format of racing where a team completes a long distance triathlon in a multi-loop format to complete a 4500m Swim (6 x 750m), 120km Bike (6 x 20km) and 30km Run (6 x 5km). Unlike a regular triathlon relay where each team member completes the entire distance of a given segment (Swim-Bike-Run) of the race, a MultiMan splits up the distance of each segment into a shorter multi-loop format. In SoloMan an individual competes in the 4000m Swim, 120km Bike and 30km Run in the same six (6) loop format as MultiMan. Please see the MultiMan info page for details.

Cobourg Will Have Age Group Spots To The 2008 World Championships in Vancouver. We are pleased to announce that on August 11, 2007 the Cobourg Olympic Distance race will have two spots per age group for the World Championships being held in Vancouver June 14 and 15, 2008.
Cobourg will be the site of the Provincial Sprint Championships on August 12th and Gravenhurst will host the Provincial Club Championships on July 15th. Details for all of the 2007 races are in the Events Section.
Our Season Long Draw Is Back
With the draw being held in October 2007 it means no early season deadlines. We are trying to thank you for coming out to our races all year and the good thing about having a season long draw is that we intend to keep adding prizes. We will track your races and once you have entered THREE OR MORE you are automatically entered. WE will be posting the prize list early in the New Year.
Also back in 2007 will be the Get To Know You Contest and Sponsor Survey. Just for completing a survey, that we use to make the series better, you are entered into a draw where you could win one of three (3) free races of your choice or some other great prizes from our sponsors. The Get To Know You Contest and Sponsor Survey will be online in late February.

Club Reward System From MultiSport Canada
Our Club Reward System rewards clubs for their participation at MultiSport Canada events. We have developed this program in the hope that it will introduce more people to Triathlon and Duathlon while showing support for all OAT registered clubs, OAT registered coaches and members of other official clubs. The MultiSport Canada Club Reward system will reward clubs for their participation at MultiSport Canada events and allow your club to raise money for club purposes or give back to your members. The simple premise is the more racers from a club the more that MultiSport Canada will donate to your club. We will even look at a club donation if you are able to bring a large group of volunteers to any one race. Full details.
2007 HSBC Race Day Awards
Mike Cheliak Photography will once again be onsite to take pictures
for our race day awards in 2007. All athletes eligible for an award will
receive a finishers picture and a medal. Here is a sample of the
personalized picture award.
For races with over 150 registered two (2) weeks prior to race day will have medals and pictures for the top three (3) finishers in 5 year age categories. Races with under 150 registered two (2) weeks prior to race day will have medals and pictures for the top three (3) finishers in 10 year age categories.
After much discussion with the athletes and crew of the HSBC series, we have formulated a new and exciting system for the race day photo awards for the 2007 season. In the past, a photo has been printed by default for every age group award recipient. This practice has led to thousands of wasted photos over the past 3 seasons that were never picked up. Storage, handling and management of these photos reached a critical level this year and many photos went missing and still the thousands of left over photos remained. A new format for awards was required to alleviate this problem and we took the task very seriously. It is of the utmost importance both to the HSBC series and Mike Cheliak Photography that this fun and unique award be maintained for all the loyal HSBC athletes. The following information will outline the procedure for this season. If at any time you have questions about this, please feel free to contact MultiSport at email or Mike Cheliak at info@mikecheliak.com.
-
Each award recipient will be identified both at the event awards presentation and on the MultiSport results page online.
-
All recipients will use the following procedure to claim their award:
-
You will visit the www.mikecheliak.com website
-
You will locate the photo you would like used for your award from the event gallery
-
You will provide the photo details to info@mikecheliak.com and will include your name, race, placement, age group and finish time
-
Once you have supplied this information to Mike Cheliak you will have the following options:
-
You can elect to have your print emailed to you in digital print ready format at no cost
-
You can elect to have your print mailed to you at a cost of $6.00 payable via PayPal invoice
-
You can have your award printed and picked up at the following race. If you are unable to collect your photo at the following race, it will be returned to Mike Cheliak and you will need to pay the $6 shipping and handling to collect the award.
No awards will remain on site after the following event. All photo awards from the previous seasons will be available for pick up until after the Welland Triathlon in July. Once that event has passed, all awards will be destroyed and no longer available.
While this change is a fairly drastic move from the previous years,
it is also very exciting. As an athlete you can now pick and choose from
a large selection of great photos from your run, swim or bike portion
of the race and not just the finish line shots that were used in previous
years. We all hope this new system will be more beneficial to all the
athletes.

Race Day Insurance Fees and OAT Fees Now Included

This year we have incorporated the OAT One-Day Membership fee into our race fees and there are no additional fees beyond what is posted on the website. If you already are an OAT member your race fees will be $5.00 less. If you would like more information about OAT please visit their website by clicking on this link www.triathlonontario.com.
Technical Director's Notes In The Pre-Race Email
Not sure about a new venue or changes to an existing course Jason Vurma, our Series Technical Director, will tell you what to look for. We want to make sure you have a great race experience and know what to expect on race day. When you receive your pre-race email, about three days before race day, you will be able to read the Technical Director's notes.
