Hi! I’m Will Newell. I’m a 43 year old husband and father of three. I own a company that does automotive and diesel repair which keeps me busy during the days.
Eleven years ago I was nearly 300 pounds and smoked a pack and a half of cigarettes each day. I was 32 years old and had been smoking since I was 14. As my hatred for smoking grew and my daughter got old enough to follow me around, I realized that it was time for a change. On my second attempt, I quit smoking cold turkey and haven’t had a cigarette since. I lost 72 pounds in 17 weeks and through cycling and the gym, lost another 31 pounds in the following months. By 2011, I had lost 103 pounds and was in the best shape of my life. The boredom of the gym led me to seek a more challenging way of staying fit and as I result I decided to pursue triathlon.
I hired Mat Reid as a swim coach and did my first triathlon with MultiSport Canada in Binbrook in 2012. The disappointment of needing the boat to rescue me in the water led me to sign up for Welland the following week. This began my triathlon addiction.
After my first season, I joined Mat Reid’s Fighting Koalas Triathlon Team and will be competing in my 8th season with my 50th race in Welland. I’m hoping to improve on last year’s season which produced 4 consecutive age group wins and the series championship win.
The people in triathlon have been great to me and have helped me every step along the way. I’m hoping to return this same camaraderie that I received to the people who are new to the sport.
Hoping to share a great season with everyone at MultiSport Canada’s great events!
